***THE DAILY LIVEPRAYER TV NUGGET: I ended the Friday night TV program with this very issue. I would encourage you to click the link and you can forward the video to the 48:10 mark to hear my commentary (some called it a mini-sermon) on this important issue. Liveprayer TV 2/10/23:

The $100 million dollar theologically bogus ad campaign. After 30 years on the front lines of the ministry, I have seen it all both from this lost world and from those who purport to be on the side of Christ. The interesting things is nothing is new. Throughout Paul’s letters in the New Testament are the warnings about those who want to see Christianity wiped out as well as the theological error from within the church. While I would normally be willing to be more gentle in my rebuke of this latest Christian effort to reach people for Christ, I simply can’t since the people who put this $100 million dollar campaign together are far too mature and sophisticated and those who funded it are also far too mature and sophisticated to not understand these types of outreaches ultimately end up harming the cause of Christ more than they help.

What I am referring to is the “He Gets Us” ad campaign th! at will spend $20
million on an ad in the Super Bowl, and the other $80 million on a TV, radio, internet, and billboard ad campaign around the country. Let me begin up front with a critical factoid you must know. The standard commission rate to book advertising is 15%. The organizer of this campaign is Haven, a Grand Haven, Michigan marketing company. So you need to understand up front Haven looks to make at least $15 MILLION in commission alone from this effort. Funding for this campaign is coming from the Green Family who owns Hobby Lobby who are long-time donors to Christian causes. Another major donor is the Kansas-based nonprofit Servant Foundation. Other donors have chosen to remain anonymous.

Normally, the problem with these type of campaigns is that usually do a very poor job of follow-up, thus minimizing potential results. However, the main problem with this campaign is the premise they start from. They state the goal is to “”challenge the negative views on Christianity. On the
surface, that sounds like a noble and worthwhile goal but there is one HUGE glaring problem. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE NEGATIVE VIEWS ON CHRISTIANITY BY THOSE WHO HAVE REJECTED CHRIST AND BIBLICAL TRUTH! People who reject the Bible and faith in Jesus DO NOT WANT TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR BELIEFS AND ACTIONS! So those people will ALWAYS have a negative view on Christianity.

Here is why this is a foolish effort for those who created this campaign (unless they were just trying to make money) and those funding it, and why as mature and sophisticated Believers they must be called out. In order to try and achieve their goal of “changing the negative views on Christianity,” THEY HAVE TO PRESENT COMPROMISED TRUTH AND A WATERED DOWN GOSPEL! Sadly, that is EXACTLY what they have done! Their ad campaign is highly polished, beautifully produced, however the content is gross theological error! One of the ad campaigns that will air on the Super Bowl equates Jesus w! ith an
illegal alien. JESUS WAS NEVER AT ANY TIME AN ILLEGAL ALIEN! This goes back to the LIE I deal with every Christmas when Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Egypt to avoid him being killed by Herod. EGYPT WAS PART OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, THUS MARY, JOSEPH, AND JESUS WERE NOT THERE ILLEGALLY!!! Another portion of the ad campaign deals with the tacit approval of the LGBTQ lifestyle and agenda. MORE PURE THEOLOGICAL LIES!!! This Michigan marketing firm and those high profile donors have no excuse for pushing such watered down, theologically incorrect lies to the masses!!!

Over the years I have railed against various marketing strategies to attract people to church. The “Seeker” movement started in the late 80s in suburban Chicago at Willow Creek Church by Bill Hybels. The “Purpose Driven” movement started by Rick Warren at Saddleback Church in California. The “prosperity gospel” movement with its’ roots in Christian TV with people like Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, TD Jak! es, and a host of other
“prosperity pimps!” These were all man-made marketing campaigns to get non-Christians into the church. Listen, I LOVE those who think out of the box, those who find creative ways to get people to church, but here is the problem. ONCE THEY ARE IN CHURCH THEY MUST HEAR THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL! What happened was these marketing strategies were successful in getting people into the church, but to keep them coming back they refused to talk about sin, hell, and tell people the truth that without Jesus they would die and be lost for eternity! Only God knows how many people went to these churches, died, and are forever in the flames of hell because nobody had the guts to tell them the truth about their eternal soul!

In trying to “change the negative views on Christianity,” those involved in the “He Gets Us” campaign have simply played on people’s emotions without telling them the truth. IF WE DON’T TELL THEM, WHO WILL??? As you read Paul’s letters to the ch! urches in the New
Testament, you read about him dealing with this same theological error. Those who were making up a false gospel, those who were tickling ears. Paul took the Gospel to the people of his day, and once he was before them SHARED THE TRUTH ABOUT SIN, THEIR ETERNAL SOUL, AND THAT JESUS AND JESUS ALONE COULD SAVE THEM!!! Any ad campaign that doesn’t tell people the truth about their sin, about the fact that without faith in Jesus they will die and burn in hell for all eternity, is nothing but a theological SCAM! SADLY THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THIS “HE GETS US” CAMPAIGN IS!!! I am sorry, but once again, those who put this together are far too mature and sophisticated, those who funded it are far too mature and sophisticated. Instead of changing the negative views on Christianity, all they have done is promote theological lies and wasted a golden opportunity to bring lost souls to faith in Jesus.

Today is the Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. Hundreds of millions around the world will tune in to watch the game. Billions will be wagered on the outcome. This is the perfect day to talk to you about the Biblical case against gambling.

It sickens me how sports gambling has now become legal in all 50 states. Decades ago you had to physically go to Las Vegas or place bets with a bookmaker. Than over the past 20 years with the advent of the Internet, you could gamble from the comfort of your home online. So it isn’t like someone who wanted to bet on a football game couldn’t, it just took some effort.

Sadly, over the last few years, sports gambling has become legal in all 50 states though a handful are still working on the implementation. We are already seeing an uptick in emails from people with gambling problems and the majority or young males of high schoo! l age
thru their 20’s. All the states have done is create a whole new generation of addicted gamblers, making money for the state on a vice they used to lock up bookmakers over the last 100 years!

I am often asked whether it is a sin to buy a Lottery ticket, or place a bet on a sporting event like the Super Bowl. I am going to tell you up front that there is no verse in the Bible that says, “thou shalt not gamble.” However, let me give you a Biblical basis why gambling is a sin.

Gambling involves an element of risk. Ultimately, you are putting your faith in something other than God for the outcome. Therein lies the foundation of why gambling is a sin. Instead of trusting God, instead of putting your faith in God, you have chosen to put your faith in luck. You are hoping to beat the odds and it is putting your hope and faith in something other than God that makes gambling a sin. Let me outline for you three additional reasons why gambling is a sin.

First, it can! cause
you to lose sight of your priorities. Never forget, anytime something is more important than the Lord in your life, it is a sin. We are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart and He MUST be our first priority at all times. Second, it can be a poor use of God’s resources that He has entrusted to you. Many people I have counseled are in financial difficulties, not because they have not been blessed by God, but because they have misused and mishandled their blessing.

Lastly, it can be a stumblingblock to your brother or sister. Many people have a compulsive nature, could end up in total bondage to gambling. So while it may not be a problem in your life, your involvement may cause someone else to have a problem with gambling.

Let me make an important point. When I talk about gambling, I am referring to the lottery, sports gambling, casino games, private card games…but I am also talking about the financial markets. Having been involved heavily in the finan! cial
markets in the 80’s, I can tell you that many people use the word investing, when in fact they are literally gambling. When you are taking a financial position in the outcome of something that is unknown, that is gambling no matter what words you want to use. You have as much control over the stock price of a particular company as you do over the performance of your favorite football team.

***This is NOT an indictment against having stocks and bonds. Prudent, reasoned, well strategized investment plans are encouraged in God’s Word. I am talking about those who are simply rolling the dice hoping to get lucky in the stock market.

The Bible teaches us to be wise stewards with the resources God has entrusted to us. I am a strong advocate of investing a portion of our resources in well researched, fundamentally sound opportunities that have the real potential of giving us a reasonable return. That is wise use of God’s money. God encourages this type of prudent inves! ting. The
line is crossed into gambling when you are just “hoping to be right,” or entering into a situation with greed as your motive. No prayer, no research, simply taking a chance you might win. For the above outlined reasons, that is a sin my friend.

I love you and care about you so much. I will be praying for you today, especially those who have been caught up in the bondage of this addiction to gambling. If you, or someone you know is addicted to gambling, know that I will be praying today for those who are in this bondage. God is a God of deliverance and He can deliver someone from the bondage of gambling.

Never forget that there is hope in Christ, and no matter how bad someone has destroyed their life, God can help them put the pieces together if they are ready to surrender to Him. Gambling is a sin, since inherent in the nature of gambling there is a reliance on chance instead of faith in God. But like all sin, Christ died on the cross to wash our sins away and ! give us
victory!

Also, if you are a fan of football or just enjoy the commercials or fellowship with friends and good food in what has become an unofficial holiday each year, enjoy the day. Hopefully the game will live up to the hype and be SUPER!

In His love and service,

Your friend and brother in Christ,

Bill Keller
