Putting Your Troubles on Hold

(Mark 6:31)

Putting your troubles on hold. Today is the last day before the weekend. For most, the weekend is a time to get away from the pressures of work and relax. Even if you have to work during the weekend, let me encourage you to spend as much time as possible in the next couple of days putting your troubles on hold and focusing instead on rest and relaxation. I am not trying to minimize the complex and difficult situations many of you are facing, but we MUST find pockets of time in our life to put the burdens down and simply rest. You are much better equipped to handle life’s problems when you are fresh and energized, then when you are tired and running on fumes. It is in those run down times when our problems look insurmountable and we are most apt to become depressed and lose hope. Even Jesus had to get away once in a while to recharge his physical body.

A time of rest does many things for you. It helps you to regain your physical strength. However, just as important, it allows you to regain your mental strength. Fighting day after day wears us down mentally and we get so focused on our problems that we lose sight of possible alternatives that may help us in our struggles. Getting worn down also causes us to lose perspective causing us to forget that God is still in control. Most important though, a time of rest helps us to refocus on our personal relationship with the Lord. In the midst of our trials, we can miss out on that daily, intimate time with Him which just compounds our problems. That time of rest allows us to not only recharge our bodies and minds, but our relationship with the Lord.

Just hours before going to the cross, Jesus told His disciples that in this life they would have many trials. He did not want them to be deceived into thinking that just because they had walked with Him, they were immune from life’s problems. But He promised them that He would always be with them. We are heirs to that promise as follower’s of Christ. It is the Christ living in us that gives us the ability to live victorious lives. Never lose sight that the Bible tells us that we are more than conquerors through Him. That means whatever you are facing today, whatever obstacles may be in your life, because of Jesus, you can overcome them and be victorious. So in these next few days while you rest, while you recharge, dwell not on your problems…..but on the fact that we have total victory in Jesus!

I love you and care about you. I pray that you will have a wonderful few days of rest and relaxation, that you will be able to spend quality time with family and friends, and that most important you will spend some quality time with the Lord. He loves you, cares about you, and will make you adequate each day for the challenges that you face. Focus on living life in His strength and not your strength, and those burdens won’t seem as heavy. Enjoy the weekend as you put your troubles on hold, and find that peace that passes all human understanding in Him.

In His love and service,
Your friend and brother in Christ,
Bill Keller

Prayer is Talking to God

(Matthew 6:9-13)

Prayer is talking to God. One of the most misunderstood things that we do in our life is pray. Prayer my friend is simply our communication with God. Nothing more, nothing less. It is the wonderful privilege that our Creator has given us to communicate with Him. The subject of prayer has probably been over-analyzed to the point people have all sorts of tortured notions of what it is. There have been so many books written, so much teaching on this issue, that people are afraid how they pray is wrong”!!! Let me say that the ONLY wrong way to pray, is NOT to pray.

My friend, if you never learn ONE OTHER THING from me, please, learn this. Prayer is not some mystical experience, it is not magical words, it is simply our communication directly with God. YOU DO NOT NEED ANOTHER PERSON TO TALK TO GOD…..YOU DO NOT NEED A SPECIAL FORMULA TO GO TO GOD….YOU DO NOT NEED EXACT WORDS TO TALK TO GOD…JUST TALK TO HIM THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD YOUR VERY BEST FRIEND…..WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT GOD IS!!!!!

One of the most popular books in recent times is the book The Prayer of Jabez. This is a great “model for prayer”, much like the anchor verse for today’s Devotional given to us by Jesus is a “model for prayer”. The sad thing to me is the number of people that I hear from every day people who think that there is some magical formula in the Prayer of Jabez. First, in the proper context, it is the Biblical account of ONE person’s prayer to God. The most important fact is, it is a great example of how ONE person, communicated with their Creator. After all, that is what prayer is. The sad thing to me is how many people think that there is something “magical” about this prayer. IT WAS NO MORE SPECIAL TO GOD THE TIME THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY UTTERED, THEN WHAT YOU SAY TO GOD TODAY!!!!

Sadly, to sell books, this simple passage from the Bible, has become to many people, some sort of ‘special magic prayer”. Please, hear me when I say this. THE MOST SPECIAL PRAYER TO GOD IS WHEN YOU TALK TO HIM OPENLY AND HONESTLY FROM YOUR HEART!!! I can assure you, by reciting the prayer of Jabez, you are no more assured, or guaranteed of having your prayers answered, then if you recite any other “prayer” that is written down. All you are doing, is praying for the same thing, Jabez asked God for out of a needy heart many years ago. The point I want you to understand today is that there is no “formatted” prayer, or “pre-prepared prayer” that moves the heart of God more then what you can say to Him. IT IS YOU, IN YOUR OPEN AND HONEST WAY, ASKING HIM FOR THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART THAT GOD IS INTERESTED IN!!!!!

I love you and care about you so much. So many I deal with daily are frustrated because they “prayed the Prayer of Jabez”, or they said some other pre-written prayer, and God never answered. PRAYER IS NOT A MAGIC ACT! Prayer is that intimate conversation that YOU have with God, one-on-one where you share YOUR heart with Him. It is no more complicated then you telling God how you feel. IT IS SIMPLY YOUR OPEN AND HONEST CONVERSATION WITH GOD, YOUR CREATOR!!!!

You don’t have to say specific “magic” words, you don’t have to be in a certain physical position to talk to God. Just simply take a few minutes, talk to God just like you are talking to your mom, your dad, you husband, your wife, or your best friend. Spill your heart to God. Be open and honest, since He knows anyway. All prayer is, is talking with God. There are no magic words, no magic formulas, it is simply you talking to God.

I will pray for you today, that you will talk to God just like you would your best friend. After all, that is what God is. YOUR BEST FRIEND. You don’t have to worry about saying the “right thing”. You don’t have to worry about letting someone else speak to God for you. You can talk to Him, one on one, just like I am talking to you right now. Share your hurts, your pains, your joys, your pleasures, just talk to Him. He is waiting for you, and sadly to say, more willing to talk to us then we are to Him. MAKE THE TIME TODAY TO GET ALONE AND TALK TO GOD!!!

Thank you for standing with me through your love, your prayers, and your generous financial support. We are able to share the hope and love of Jesus Christ with close to 2 million people worldwide every day because you care! I am excited to announce that in 41 months, we have now had over 30,000 people that we know of accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. THAT is why I come in to work each morning, and why I thank God for YOU every day!!! Together, we are making an impact for the Kingdom of God!!!

Do You Work for the Things of God as Hard as Things of This World?

(I Corinthians 15:58, Galatians 6:9, 2 Timothy 4:7)

Do you work for the things of God as hard as you work for the things of this world? Jon Gruden, became the youngest coach in history to win the Super Bowl this past Sunday, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory over the Oakland Raiders. Living in the Tampa area, I have had the opportunity to follow Coach Gruden since he became the coach of the Buccaneers this time last year. One of the trademarks of Coach Gruden is his incredible work ethic. He is famous for getting up at 3:17am each morning, and working until 10 or 11pm each night. His entire life is focused on, and dedicated to winning football games. Sunday, he received the ultimate payoff for all of his hard work and determination as the Bucs won Super Bowl XXXVII.

I have had the pleasure throughout my life of personally knowing many people that are extremely successful by the worlds standards. The one common bond that they all share is an incredible work ethic. They are driven to do whatever it takes to succeed in their given profession. They will routinely put in 100 hour plus work weeks, they will make whatever sacrifices they have to, in order to be successful. There is literally no price that they are not willing to pay to achieve their goals.

My question to you this morning is this. If people are willing to literally give their very lives for the temporary success that this world can offer, how much more should the men and women of God be willing to work for the eternal success the Creator of this world can offer? Let me ask this question again, and I pray that right now you will stop whatever you are doing, and ponder it. IF PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO LITERALLY GIVE THEIR VERY LIVES FOR THE TEMPORARY SUCCESS THAT THIS WORLD CAN OFFER, HOW MUCH MORE SHOULD THE MEN AND WOMEN OF GOD BE WILLING TO WORK FOR THE ETERNAL SUCCESS THAT THE CREATOR OF THIS WORLD CAN OFFER? If Jon Gruden is willing to get up at 3:17am and put in 20 hour days to win a football game, that in the light of eternity is absolutely meaningless, how much more willing should the men and women that God has called to His service, be willing to do to win souls for eternity?

My sole motivation for this word to you today is this. We can ALL do more. EVERY man, woman, and young adult that has accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, is called by God to His service. Sharing the hope and love of Christ is not just the job of your pastor, or an evangelist, but is the job of EVERY person that has accepted Jesus Christ into their hearts and lives. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION. It has only been because of the tireless work and efforts of those saints who have gone on before us that we share in this great faith today. It is OUR JOB AND RESPONSIBILITY to insure, should Jesus tarry, that the next generation of saints who are still not even born, have a rich and solid Christian heritage and family throughout this world.

That will not happen by accident, but through the hard work and efforts of men and women of God all over the planet. There is a very real enemy that would love to destroy the people of God. We live in a world today that will not let the message of hope and love through Jesus Christ be heard without a fight. We have to fight, we have to work hard to make sure that the TRUTH of the Bible is boldly proclaimed. The enemy has no shame or fear in telling people the lie that there is no God, that there is no truth, that you can live any way you want. We have to be equally as bold and fearless to tell people worldwide that there IS a God that loves them very much, that there is TRUTH found in the Bible, and that the only real peace, joy, and abundance that this life can offer comes from living for Christ 24/7/365.

I love you and care about you so much. I pray that you will be encouraged and motivated to take some time and ask God what more you can do to serve Him. There is nothing wrong with working hard to be successful in whatever your earthly profession may be. However, should we not be equally as passionate and diligent in our work for God? I think back on what a handful of mostly uneducated men totally sold our for Jesus did right after his death. These men that had no great position in life, they did not have great financial resources, traveling was very difficult, and there were no form of modern communication. Yet they literally turned the world upside down as they helped lay the foundation of Christianity. With our incredible education opportunities, people in the Kingdom that have vast resources, being able to fly around the world as easy as it is to drive down the street, and all of the amazing communication devices we enjoy….HOW MUCH MORE CAN THOSE MEN AND WOMEN OF GOD WHO ARE SOLD OUT…MAKE AN IMPACT FOR THE CAUSE OF CHRIST???

IF PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO LITERALLY GIVE THEIR VERY LIVES FOR THE TEMPORARY SUCCESS THAT THIS WORLD CAN OFFER, HOW MUCH MORE SHOULD THE MEN AND WOMEN OF GOD BE WILLING TO WORK FOR THE ETERNAL SUCCESS THAT THE CREATOR OF THIS WORLD CAN OFFER?God is speaking to YOU today!!!

A Higher Standard of Living

(1 Chronicles 29:5, Proverbs 23:26, Romans 12:1)

A higher standard of living. Each day in this Devotional, I deal with controversial, real life issues that we all face in this life. Many of these
issues the church is reluctant to tackle. My goal each day is to deal with these issues from a Biblical perspective. Most who respond are most kind and appreciative of the Scriptural context these issues are put in. However,
there are always those who get enraged at what I say, and send vicious emails
how I just don’t get it.

You see my friend, God gave us freewill to make choices. He decided NOT to make us simply robots who would love Him, serve Him, obey Him, but make that an act we choose to do on our own, out of our love for Him. It was this
freewill that God gave us that allowed satan and 1/3 of the angles to rebel against
God. It was this freewill that God gave us that allowed Adam and Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden. It is this freewill that God gave you and me that allows us
to make decisions throughout the day to obey, or rebel against God.

The problem with freewill is that it allows us to ignore the Absolute Truth God gave us in His Word. It allows us to ignore the black and white reality of right and wrong. The Bible in places refers to how we are left to our “own imaginations”. Those who choose to reject God’s Word and the absolute truth it represents, basically decide themselves what is right and what is wrong. That is fine, but since we all have freewill, what is right to you, may be wrong to someone else. And what is wrong to someone else, may be right to you. Do you see the chaos this creates?

Unless there is a standard, unless there is a guide, what is right and wrong becomes
something each person decides for themselves. That is one reason God gave us
His Word, so that we would have the black and white of ABSOLUTE TRUTH to guide us in our journey.

The issue that I want to deal with today, is that as Christians, as believers in
the Lord Jesus Christ, we have been called to a higher standard of living. When I deal with issues like sex, alcohol, forgiveness, serving others, so many just don’t realize that as Christians we have been called to live a higher standard of life. Those great heroes of faith recorded in Hebrews chapter 11 understood that we are NOT citizens of this country, but of another country!

While for this season we are in this world, we are no longer OF this world once we commit our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ. I am in no way saying we are to separate ourselves from this culture we live in. Quite the opposite.
Jesus said we were to be the “salt of the earth”, the “light of the world”. However,
we must never forget that as believers, we are called to a higher standard of living.

Many scoff at the Biblical example Christ set when He said if we lust in our heart we have already sinned. My friends, yes, the sex drive, hormones, emotions,
are all very normal. But God created us above the animals. We are not to be
slaves to our natural drives, but to be in control of them. God has given us the
power over our flesh, over our natural, carnal desires. To deny this is to deny the
power of God that resides within you. We can love others. Not in our own strength,
but in the strength God gives us. We can forgive those who treat us wrong. Not in
our own strength, but in the strength God gives us. We are here to serve others, not
to be served as the world would like us to believe. We can not do that not in our
own strength, but in the strength God gives us.

You see my friend, as a follower of Christ, as a Christian, we have not only been
called to a higher way of living, but given the power to do it!!!!

The fact is, when we surrender ourselves to live a higher life, a life God has called us to, we are blessed above and beyond all we could ever imagine. Not always in earthly blessings, but in REAL blessings. Peace, contentment, joy. I promise you, I know people right now, with all the resources this world can offer, who would give a million dollars for just an hours worth of peace. An hours worth of real joy. You can’t buy these things. They are not for sale. And they only come from living a life God has called His children to live. So many are afraid of “missing out”. The only thing you gain from rebelling against God is some temporary pleasure, that always leaves you wanting more. Temporary happiness, that turns quickly to pain. You sell out the real things of God, for the momentary gratification of this world that quickly turns into dark despair. Blessings follow our obedience to God, pain and heartache ALWAYS follow rebellion.

I love you and care so much for you. One of my goals each day is to help you live the high calling God has called each of us to. We must never forget that we are different. We are special. Our personal relationship with Christ is what makes us special. It is something the lost of this world can not comprehend. Because of His love for us, because of that special relationship, we have been called to live a higher life during our brief journey here. We must never forget that it is NOT our life, but our life belongs to Him.

We are called to die to self daily, so that HE may live through us. This is a daily
process that we all must go through. But it is because of this daily process of
dying to self so that Christ can live through us, that we can live the higher life
He has called us to live. We don’t have to be like the lost of the world, but we
can set the example for them. We don’t have to give in to the lusts and carnal
pleasures that only destroy peoples lives, but live above them and enjoy the real
blessings of God’s peace, love, happiness, and joy.

Please know that I will be praying for you today. Praying that you will take these words seriously today. Realize today, maybe for the first time how special you are to the Lord. Realize today, maybe for the first time that as Christians, we are called to live a higher life than the lost around us. It is in living this higher life that the hurting, the hopeless, the lost of this
world will ask us what is so different between our life and theirs. It is than that we can share with them the hope and love we have in Christ Jesus. As followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard of living. Let us
live for Him each day and proclaim to this world through our very lives that He is the way, the truth and the life!!!!!

Running for the Prize

(Philippians 3:14)

Running for the prize. For those who love football, today is known as Super Sunday. This afternoon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Oakland Raiders for the Vince Lombardi trophy that is awarded to the winner of pro footballs’ championship game. The season that started out with such hope and promise in July for 32 teams, will be over except for 1 team by the end of the day.

The journey a football team takes from training camp, the pre-season, a 16 game regular season, and finally the playoffs, is full of ups and downs. It is full of peaks and valleys. Along the way people get injured, teams often change strategies, and many events lead to the ultimate success they experience.
Oakland is slightly favored to win the Super Bowl, but earlier this season lost 4 games in a row. The
Buccaneers hired a new coach this season, and last week had to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia, the same place they lost in the playoffs the last two seasons. The bottom line is both of these teams have overcome adversity, worked hard, and kept their eye on the prize.

I appreciate you allowing me to talk sports with you, a subject I have loved since I was very young. The spiritual application here is obvious. Our Christian life is a journey. There are many things that we must overcome along the way. We often have to change our strategy and gameplan at times. But through it all we MUST keep our eyes on the prize. We must not let the bumps in the road slow us down. It is important that even when things don’t work out the way we like, we don’t give up, and we stay focused. Unlike football, we don’t have to do it in our own strength. We have God on our side to give us wisdom, guidance, strength, and love, to help us each step of the way.

Unlike a football game, where either team has a chance to win, God has already defeated our foe. Unlike a football game where you have to wait until the game is over to know the final score, we already know that in the end, if we know Christ as our Savior, WE WIN!!!!! How much easier should it be for us each day to keep focused on the prize, when we know that no matter what, in the end, we will be victorious!

I love you and care about you so much. God has placed me in your life to help you along your journey. My prayer for you is that no matter what may be going on in your life, always keep focused on the prize. You can’t let the ups and downs of day to day life keep you from your ultimate objective. I truly believe that the Lord has allowed you to receive these Daily Devotionals to keep you focused on the prize. It is so easy during the course of a day to lose sight of what we are really trying to accomplish. We get off-track much of the time which ultimately keeps us from the fullness of God’s blessings. Never forget that He loves you, and wants you to know and enjoy those blessings during your life. God wants you to stay focused, to stay on track, and to keep your eyes on the prize!!!

The Biblical Case Against Gambling

(Psalms 118:8)

The Biblical case against gambling. I am often asked whether it is a sin to buy a Lottery ticket. I am going to tell you up front, that there is no verse in the Bible that says, “thou shalt not gamble.” However, let me give you a Biblical basis why gambling is a sin. Gambling involves and element of risk.
Ultimately, you are putting your faith in something other than God for the outcome. Therein lies the foundation of why gambling is a sin. Instead of trusting God, instead of putting your faith in God, you have chosen to put your faith in luck. You are hoping to beat the odds, and it is putting your hope and faith in something other than God that makes gambling a sin. Let me outline for you, three additional reasons why gambling is a sin.

First, it can cause you to lose sight of your priorities. Never forget, anytime something is more important than the Lord in your life, it is a sin. We are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, and He MUST be our first priority at all times. Second, it can be a poor use of God’s resources that He has entrusted to you. Many people I have counseled are in financial difficulties, not because they have not been blessed by God, but because they have misused and mishandled their blessing. Lastly, it can be a stumblingblock to your brother or sister. Many people have a compulsive nature, and could end up in total bondage to gambling. So while it may not be a problem in your life, your involvement may cause someone else to have a problem with gambling.

Let me make an important point. When I talk about gambling, I am referring to the lottery, sports gambling, casino games, private card games…but I am also talking about the financial markets. Having been involved heavily in the financial markets in the 80’s, I can tell you that many people use the word investing, when in fact they are literally gambling. When you are taking a financial position in the outcome of something that is unknown, that is gambling no matter what words you want to use. You have as much control over the stock price of a particular company as you do over the performance of your favorite football team.

***This is NOT an indictment against having stocks and bonds. Prudent, reasoned, well strategize investment plans are encouraged in God’s Word. I am talking about those who are simply rolling the dice hoping to get lucky in the stock market.

The Bible teaches us to be wise stewards with the resources God has entrusted to us. I am a strong advocate of investing a portion of our resources in well researched, fundamentally sound opportunities that have the real potential of giving us a reasonable return. That is wise use of God’s money. God encourages this type of prudent investing. The line is crossed into gambling when you are just “hoping to be right,” or entering into a situation with greed as your motives. No prayer, no research, simply taking a chance you might win. For the above outlined reasons, that is a sin my friend.

I love you and care about you so much. I will be praying for you today, especially those who have been caught up in the bondage of this addiction to gambling. If you, or someone you knows is addicted to gambling, know that I will be praying today for those who are in this bondage. God is a God of deliverance, and He can deliver someone from the bondage of gambling. Never forget that there is hope in Christ, and no matter how bad someone has screwed up their life, God can help them put the pieces together if they are ready to surrender to Him. Gambling is a sin, since inherit in the nature of gambling there is a reliance on chance instead of faith in God. But like all sin, Christ died on the cross to wash our sins away and give us victory!

In His love and service,
Your friend and brother in Christ,
Bill Keller
